Who We Are

Clarity Eye Care was created by Dr. Edward Bryant, and our mission is to bring new energy and inspiration to an eye care practice with over 40 years of history in Ithaca.  Continuing in the tradition of patient-centered eye care with the most advanced technology available, you will find an experience that is memorable, even enjoyable, and never rushed.

Our primary goal is to create an office environment that offers an unexpected experience and makes life better for our patients and our employees.  By taking the time to talk about your vision needs, and explaining your eye health concerns in ways you can understand, we are certain that you will leave with clarity of vision and clarity of understanding.  After all, that is what you expect from your eye care professional.

Our Mission

Dr. Ted Bryant has been serving the eye care needs of the Southern Tier of New York since 2003, and is excited to be a part of the Ithaca community.  His mission is very simple and refreshing:  to provide thorough, accurate, visual analysis and eye health examinations in an unhurried setting. 

In today’s world, it is all too common for medical visits to be rushed and stressful.  We hear all too often about patient’ complaints of exams performed by technicians, followed by the doctor “waltzing in and out,” with no explanations or time to answer questions.  At Clarity Eye Care, your doctor will analyze all test results and perform the exam himself, followed by full explanations with time for questions and answers.  We invite you to join us in this rewarding interactive experience.

Dr. Bryant

Optometrist

Dr. Bryant is our fearless leader and chief visionary officer. He’s been an optometrist since 1999 and has wanted to be one as long as he can remember. (Since age 8, actually). Dr. Bryant believes that optometry is an amazing profession and is honored to be able to impact our patients’ lives by helping to keep their eyes healthy and see better by bending light with glasses or contacts. He believes that people are unique and amazing and wants to bring out the best in his patients and the amazing team of people who he works alongside. When he is not in the office, you will catch him camping, riding his motorcycle, or spending time outdoors. He also volunteers as an optometrist and coordinator/cofounder of the Lions Free Vision clinic, and is on the board for Lions Camp Badger.

Dr. Visco

Optometrist

Dr. Visco is a beloved member of our team and his warm and caring personality is present each and every day.  Laughter is often heard from parents and patients alike, especially when he is performing a child’s first eye exam.  Dr. Visco loves being a part of the Clarity Eye Care team because we can work and laugh together while making a difference in the community.  As a natural teacher and educator, he is in his element when teaching our patients about their eyesight and eye health.  In his spare time, Dr. Visco loves reading up on the science and new research in the eye care field and he is an avid (formerly professional) photographer.

Dr. Kevan Smith

The first time Dr. Bryant met Dr. Smith, he knew he had to find a way to introduce him to our patients at Clarity Eye Care.  His easy going demeanor and his love for people makes him a perfect fit for our team, and you’ll find him most often at our Collegetown location.  He’s an Upstate NY local, grew up in Cicero, NY and graduated from The University at Buffalo with a bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences. He completed his doctorate in optometry at The New England College of Optometry in Boston, MA, during which time he completed research and extra training in dry eye and ocular surface disease. After graduation, Dr. Smith went on to complete a residency in cornea, contact lens and refractive surgery at the Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, TN.  So, he’s not only a great guy, but he’s super smart.  Dr. Smith loves to work with patients who are interested in contact lenses, and he specializes in working with lenses that correct astigmatism, presbyopia (need for reading glasses) and irregular shaped corneas.  If you have been interested in contact lenses but thought they were not available in your prescription, Dr. Smith will surprise you!  When he is not practicing optometry, you’ll find him enjoying the outdoors while fishing, hiking and camping or indoors playing Scythe on rainy days.  He likes music of all sorts and has dabbled in playing the keyboard.  Dr. Smith’s fiancé is also an optometrist and they are planning an August 2023 wedding.

Dawn

Licensed Optician

Dawn is a licensed optician by trade, but a Lion by heart.  She is very active in the Trumansburg Lions Club and is the co-founder of and optician coordinator for the Lions Free Vision Clinic.  She lives by the motto “Where there’s a need, there’s a Lion.”  That spirit of service is what our patients love about Dawn.  She has the technical skills and experience as an optician, but also has the heart to take care of PEOPLE.  You’ll find Dawn in the office helping our patients find the perfect frame to fit their needs and personality and then choosing a lens design to give them the best vision at work or at play. When she is not at the office, she is often volunteering with the Lions Club in various roles or helping out her community by participating with other service organizations.  

Cathy

Licensed Optician

Cathy has known Dr. Bryant since 2009 and she is thrilled to finally be working with him and our Clarity Eye Care team.  As a licensed optician, she finds it satisfying to help people find eyewear that they LOVE, not just something that “works.”  She comes from a large family and loves being a “boy mom” and watching football.  Go Bills!  Children and adults with all different abilities have a special place in her heart, and it makes her day when she can connect with them in a positive way.  In the evenings, you’ll catch her with a book or playing board games with her family.

Lauren

Optician Apprentice

Lauren has been with our office longer than any other team member, even before it was Clarity Eye Care. You likely recognize Lauren because she recently moved from her long time role as an optometric technician into our optical department as our optician apprentice. She is working through the vigorous 2-year process of becoming a New York State Licensed Optician. As an apprentice, she works alongside our licensed opticians to help you find the perfect frame and lenses to match your style, personality and vision needs. Lauren has the incredible ability to be very scientific and analytical but also very creative and artistic. If you look hard enough, you’ll see some of her original artwork featured throughout Clarity Eye Care. Everyone loves working with Lauren, patients and coworkers alike and we are thrilled to have her on our team. When she’s not taking care of our patients, drawing, painting or making jewelry, she will be found outdoors camping, hula hooping or chasing the cat and her two boys.

Cindi

Office Manager, Collegetown

Cindi is one of our veteran team members and she knows how to do almost anything that is asked of her at Clarity Eye Care. When there is a challenge, Cindi is always there to step in and help. She lives that through her involvement with Killawog fire department (OK, she kinda runs the place) and by chasing her granddaughter when she’s not at the office. Most commonly, Cindi is found working with our patients as an optometric technician where she asks questions, performs various tests and gets the patients ready to see the doctor. But, she also LOVES cool glasses. If you need help deciding on a frame, Cindi is always willing to step in. Just be prepared to try something unique and different, because Cindi will tell you that life is too short to wear boring glasses.

Betsy

Office Administrator

Betsy is our office administrator and takes care of most of the day to day business of running an eye care office. Depending on the day, she may also be the first smile you see when you walk in the door or hear on the phone when you call. Yes, you can hear smiles. Betsy is our resident culture carrier and truly understands the mission of Clarity Eye Care. She lives that mission every day. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her daughter, going to the movies and going camping or to the 1000 Islands with her husband.

Mary

Office Manager

Mary is the quietest but loudest voice in our office. As our office manager, Mary takes care of a million random things that come up each and every day. Her “to do” list never seems to become a “to done” list. She is soft-spoken and often works out of sight in her office, but what she brings to the table every day makes a HUGE impact on Clarity Eye Care. If she answers the phone when you call, give her a shout-out and thank her for just being awesome. When she is not at the office, you will catch her up at 4 am taking care of the cows (really) or doing something creative with crafts or flowers.

Mark

Patient Services Coordinator

Mark loves to serve others, and that’s what attracted him to Clarity Eye Care. His work is often behind the scenes and on the phone, but he helps keep the wheels turning by allowing our clinical staff to spend more time working with our patients. He may be the one calling you to let you know your glasses are ready to be fit and adjusted, or to schedule an overdue appointment. We all love the fact that Mark is not afraid to try anything, even dangling above the forest on his recent zipline experience. When he is not at the office, serves his community as a volunteer EMT.

Joanna

Patient Services Coordinator

Joanna is one of our optometric technicians, and she will likely greet you after you’ve checked in at the front desk.  She will be doing various tests to get you ready to see one of our optometrists for your eye exam.  She has a passion for helping others and she likes making her patients (especially children) feel comfortable and at ease.  Her compassion and caring personality has led her to varied experiences in the medical field, where she can support patients in achieving their optimal health.  When not at Clarity Eye Care, she loves tending to her garden, canning her home grown veggies and making homemade jams.  She has also taken up archery as a hobby recently and points out how enjoyable it is (hehe).  Joanna is a big fan of sci-fi, especially Star Wars and Marvel and she loves Disney so much that she actually worked as a Disney cast member while in college.  You may catch her singing show tunes from various musicals, very often from The Lion King.  We all think that she may have been Nala in a previous life.
