All of us at Clarity Eye Care would like to welcome Kristy Dean, O.D. to our team of eye care professionals! Thanks to all of you, who believe in the mission of Clarity Eye Care, our practice has grown and the demand for appointments has increased quickly over the last 5 years. Although we always leave space in our schedule for same day eye problems and emergencies, our patients have been waiting 3-4 weeks or longer to secure an appointment with Dr. Bryant for a comprehensive eye exam. As a result of this increasing need, we decided to search for another optometrist to join our team so we could expand office hours and add another day and evening of patient care to our schedule. Dr. Bryant and Dr. Dean have been friends and colleagues for almost 10 years, and she was overwhelmingly our first choice. We knew that she had the right values and the personality to deliver the Clarity Eye Care experience to our amazing population of patients. Dr. Dean is seeing patients on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and we encourage you to stop in and meet her. Dr. Dean has worn glasses and contact lenses from a very young age and always loved going to the eye doctor. Born and raised in Whitney Point, NY, she started at SUNY Broome and finished her bachelor’s degree in Biology at SUNY Albany. Dr. Dean then attended the Pennsylvania College of Optometry in Philadelphia, graduating with honors in 2010. Because of her love for this area, she knew she wanted to practice in Upstate New York. Getting her start in a large optometric practice in the Southern Tier, she gained experience in a wide variety of eye diseases and their treatments. In memory of Dr. Burton Markowitz…

Dr. Burton Steven Markowitz, 73, passed away on Dec. 29, 2017. Many of our long time patients remember the quick wit and hearty laugh of Dr. Burton Markowitz. He was simply “Doc” to those who knew him well. He was a problem-solver, a hugger, a master joke teller, a lover of trivia, puns, travel, and good food. For 45 years, he provided eye care to his Ithaca community and treated his patients with care and friendship. Doc retired 5 years ago and entrusted me with the task of caring for his patients and serving the town and the people he loved. Although we did not agree on EVERY decision that was needed to move the practice forward, I will always remember, respect and treasure the years and years of wisdom that he so graciously handed down. Dr. Markowitz and Tammy recently relocated to Virginia to be closer to their daughter and new grandchild, and would like to invite all of Doc’s former patients and friends to attend a gathering to honor his memory. It will be held on Sunday June 24th from 2:00-4:00pm at Bang’s Funeral Home. All are welcome to come pay their respects, share stories, and visit with the family. Changing Lives and Restoring Vision at Clarity Eye

There’s a saying: “When you love what you do, you never work a day in your life.” The challenge for most of us is finding a way to earn a living doing what you love to do, and then keeping it fresh so it doesn’t become “work.” I am very fortunate that the profession of eye care is an ever changing field. It keeps me inspired in my practice. Over the last 60 years, soft contact lens technology has constantly evolved and improved. We now have incredible contact lens products that provide visual solutions for those who have astigmatism, extremely high prescriptions, dry or sensitive eyes, and even those who wear bifocals or progressive lenses in their glasses. These days, I rarely have to tell a patient that they are not a “candidate” for soft contact lenses. One area that continued to be a challenge until recently was the use of contact lenses to provide visual rehabilitation for patients who have corneal diseases such as keratoconus, pellucid marginal degeneration, or scarring from a prior injury. All of these conditions cause the cornea, which is the clear window on the front of the eye, to become irregularly shaped and distorted. Many patients with distorted corneas are not able to obtain clear vision with glasses or traditional soft contact lenses because of the type of blur that is created. Imagine the frustration of not being able to drive or work comfortably because of distorted vision or glare. The only option in the past that would provide functional vision was rigid gas permeable (RGP) contact lenses, or some sort of hybrid lens that combined soft and gas permeable lens technology. WHY AN ONLINE EYE TEST CAN’T REPLACE YOUR EYE DOCTOR

In this time of electronic gadgets and doing more online there had to come a time where someone would create an online eye test. However, this shouldn’t replace your eye doctor for many important reasons. For many people, the notion of being able to get an eyeglass prescription and buy glasses without a trip to the eye doctor sounds appealing. But, is this really a good idea? It’s important to understand that the online exam really isn’t evaluating the health of your eyes. The purpose of such online “exam” is only measuring your visual acuity and refractive error. But, these measurements tell you nothing about the health of your eye. It cannot diagnosis such conditions such as diabetic retinopathy, cataracts, glaucoma or macular degeneration. Only seeing your eye doctor and having a comprehensive eye exam can insure your eyes are healthy and free from sight-threatening conditions. Do online eye tests have a value? It can be helpful if you are on vacation, lose your glasses and need to purchase replacements, quickly. However, you can also call your eye doctor and have your actual prescription faxed or emailed to a provider where you are. It’s important to note that you should be aware that though the results of some online eye test have been validated with limited studies, this is still a relatively new technology. More research needs to be done to test the accuracy of the prescriptions. The AOA (American Optometric Association) has important concerns regarding the accuracy and safety of the online exams. Can the potential for an inaccurate prescription be harmful to patients? There is a potential for missing serious eye health conditions which could cause irreversible damage to your eyes. Dawn brings 34 years of optical experience and service to our community and we are thrilled to have her join the team. As the owner of Westtown Optical in Ithaca, Dawn provided exceptional service to her patients and offered high quality stylish frames and the latest lens designs, much like we do. Dawn’s goal of enhancing her patients’ quality of life through better vision aligns well with our mission of creating an office environment that delivers an unexpected experience and makes life better for our patients and our employees. As part of the Clarity Eye Care team, Dawn is excited to join an eye care practice that makes quality patient care a top priority. Ahh, the good old days.

It was a beautiful morning. The fog was just beginning to lift, revealing a bright blue sky and white, puffy clouds. I don’t remember seeing clouds like that very often this summer. With the heat and humidity we’ve had so often the last few months, the clouds have been hazy and gray more than puffy and white. The crisp, cool air made for a perfect backdrop as I fired up my old motorcycle to take a 35 minute therapy session into the office. I do a lot of thinking on the motorcycle, and at that moment, it dawned on me that I would be celebrating a birthday in two weeks, the motorcycle that was chugging along underneath me was almost thirty years old, and it was built when I was celebrating my 13th birthday. The 1988 BMW R100RT still runs great and is a fun ride today, without fuel injection, antilock brakes, traction control, bluetooth audio, cruise control and a lot of other electronic wizardry that would be included with a purchase of the same BMW RT model today. Man, maybe those days really were the good old days. Maybe life was simpler? Maybe the compact disc of the day really was “good enough.” Maybe we don’t really need all the technological advancements that we think we need? As I put the kickstand down and walked into my office, there sat a big box of contact lenses that just arrived yesterday. But unlike any old contact lenses, these lenses were the entire fitting kit for the Dailies Total 1 Multifocal. I know, that means nothing to you, but it sure is a snazzy name.
